The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced that the westbound OR 126B Main Street Bridge in Springfield will be closed for approximately three weeks starting January 5. The closure is necessary to allow crews to repair the bridge, replace joints, install a new bike ramp, and repave a section on the east side.
During this period, both directions of traffic will be rerouted to the South A Street Bridge. A temporary connection from the South A Street Bridge to the roundabout will be created for westbound vehicles, along with a new traffic pattern in the roundabout that includes lane closures for safety. Pedestrians and bicyclists are also directed to use the South A Street Bridge while work is underway.
Local freight and passenger vehicles may use either the South A Street Bridge or detour via Pioneer Parkway and OR 126. Larger freight and oversized vehicles are advised to use OR 126 Bob Straub Parkway as an alternative route.
Construction activities will mainly take place during daytime hours. Lane and shoulder closures may occur as needed, with flaggers present when crews set up cones and barrels. Travelers should expect construction noise and possible delays, but businesses in the area will remain open throughout the project.
“Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work. Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers,” ODOT stated in its announcement. “Remember that fines double in all Oregon work zones, whether workers and signs are present or not.”
ODOT encourages residents to visit their project webpage for more information about ongoing construction projects around Springfield. Real-time travel conditions can also be checked at TripCheck.com, which offers updates on road status across Oregon.
