A 2021-22 season that featured the Portland State volleyball team's best conference record since 2013 and its first 20-win season since 2017 got a final cherry on top Monday as the Vikings earned USMC/AVCA Team Academic honors.
It's the second time in the past three seasons the Vikings have earned the honor, which the United States Marine Corps and American Volleyball Coaches Association handed out to all teams – NCAA Division I, II, III, Two-Year College and high school – with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher over the course of the entire academic year. The Vikings earned the honor with a 3.46 GPA, well above the benchmark.
The USMC/AVCA honor follows eight members of the Vikings' team qualifying for the Academic All-Big Sky team in the fall. The Vikings have placed at least eight players on the Academic All-Big Sky team each of the past three seasons.
Monday's award provides a nice finishing touch to the 2021-22 academic year before the Vikings turn their full attention to their 2022 fall season. The Vikings host Central Washington in an exhibition on Saturday, Aug. 20, before opening their season with a home tournament, Aug. 26-28. Oregon, Oregon State and Long Beach State will all come to Viking Pavilion for the tournament – the Hotel Vance Rose City Showdown – with the Vikings.
