With his hat trick in Sunday's contest against Walla Walla, Andrew Martinez has broken the Warner Pacific University men's soccer record for most goals scored in a single season.
Martinez's season total now stands at 17, beating the previous record of 15 set by Arturo Bahena in 2021.
This historic run for Martinez becomes even more impressive when you realize that Martinez was able to break this record just halfway through his freshman season.
Martinez has scored in every game so far this year for the Knights, averaging 1.8 goals per game.
Martinez also has a comfortable lead in the conference for goals scored this season, having scored 10 more times than the next highest scorer.
The all-time CCC record for goals scored in a season is 32. This record has stood for over two decades, being set in 2001 by Taurai Daka of Western Baptist University. If Martinez continues at his current pace, he has a chance at breaking the conference record.
When asked about Martinez's performance this season, Head Coach Troy Ready said "Andrew is truly a special player. The fact that he is breaking records as a true freshman, halfway through our season is remarkable."
"My joy is both in watching him play at his current ability and also knowing that there's even more that can be developed and refined. Andrew has an innate desire to learn and push himself towards excellence which will serve him both on and off the field," Ready added. "As his coach, I celebrate his individual accomplishment and that of the team at large which is making his success possible."
Martinez has been instrumental to the success of the Knights so far, contributing to a perfect 9-0 start to the season. For all of his efforts, Martinez has been named CCC men's soccer offensive player of the week for three weeks in a row.
Martinez will look to add to his record when the Knights take on Bushnell University Sept. 30 at Eastside Timbers Complex and Oct. 1 in a highly anticipated matchup against Corban.
