Salem, Ore. – A Beaverton resident has claimed Oregon's first Powerball jackpot of the year. Abbas Shafii, aged 79, secured the $328.5 million prize with a ticket purchased on January 17, 2025, at the Beaverton Fred Meyer located on SW Walker Road. Opting for the lump sum payment, Shafii will receive $146.4 million.
Though Shafii declined media interviews, he shared his intentions for the winnings in a brief statement: “I am overjoyed to have won the Powerball and plan to use my prize to travel, invest and share my good fortune with non-profit organizations that are close to my heart.”
The Powerball game contributes about one-third of its sales back to the state, benefiting areas such as economic development, public education, veteran services, and state parks.
Fred Meyer received a $100,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket and announced it would donate $50,000 to the Oregon Food Bank as part of its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative.
The Oregon Lottery advises winners to sign their tickets immediately and consult with financial professionals when planning how to manage their winnings.
