The start of Oregon's 83rd Legislative Assembly coincides with the inauguration of a new presidential administration. In this context, Common Cause Oregon has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding democratic principles at the state level. The organization reflected on Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and emphasized its priorities for the upcoming legislative session.
Kate Titus, Executive Director of Common Cause Oregon, stated: "As we launch into Oregon’s 2025 state legislative session and the nation’s next presidential administration, Common Cause Oregon remains committed to democracy. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that democracy is not a state — it is an act. We must continue to act collectively to keep democracy alive and to realize its full promise."
Common Cause Oregon plans to oppose what it describes as an emerging autocratic vision in America, which contrasts with Dr. King's ideals. The organization aims to remain a reliable nonpartisan advocate for democratic values.
Titus further elaborated on their initiatives: "We’ll bring collective Oregon power to the federal fights ahead and toward protecting our state from potential federal or judicial threats. We’ll watchdog the state legislative session with a democracy lens."
The group intends to implement significant campaign finance reforms designed to empower ordinary Oregonians. They also plan to support youth leaders advocating for voting rights on school board matters and those seeking voting rights while incarcerated.
"Democracy is ours to enact," Titus concluded, emphasizing the organization's commitment to ensuring equitable access to voting.
