The Portland State soccer program announced the addition of Makena Speer and Sydney Watson on Monday. Both Oregonians will be joining Head Coach Katie Burton and the Vikings this spring.
"We are extremely excited with the addition of Makena and Sydney," Burton said. "Both are Oregon natives and are high-impact players with their prior teams. I can't wait for them to start with us this week alongside four other new players."
Speer was a four-year letterwinner, playing two seasons at Canby High School before finishing her career at Forest Grove. Speer earned Honorable Mention honors her freshman and sophomore years at Canby. The 5'11 Forward played club for ODP.
"Makena is extremely athletic and versatile," Burton said. "I see her being able to play a number of offensive positions for us."
Watson, a transfer from St. Peter's University, is a 2021 graduate of Jesuit High School where she won three OSAA 6A State Championships. The 5'1 midfielder started ten matches for St. Peter's last fall, appearing in 13.
"Sydney adds experience as a transfer and has a very high soccer IQ," Burton said. "She has played with a number of our current players so I anticipate a very smooth transition for her in our midfield. She's a great passer and sees through ball options quickly and accurately."
Also joining the Vikings this spring are newcomers Erin Marynik, Kaitlyn Jones, Liv Frazier and 2021 OSAA 6A State Player of the Year, Elle Frazier.
