Golf Team Starts Season In Fine Form, Currently Second At Hobble Creek Classic

As a start to a season goes, you would have to say the Portland State Vikings first day of golf in the 2022-23 season was pretty doggone good.

PSU opened with 36 holes on Monday at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic. The Vikings' first round 305 total would have tied for fourth-best last season among all rounds played. They followed with a second-round 298, the best score by a Viking team since March 2021. The result was a 603 total and puts the Vikings in second place in the 54-hole event with the final round on Tuesday.

PSU had four-over par 75s from sophomore Tannica Porter and junior Mariana Garcia Rosette in the first round on the 6,092-yard, par 71 Hobble Creek Golf Course. PSU was in fifth place among 18 teams after the round.

The afternoon round was led by a four-birdie effort of 72 from Porter, three birdies and 73 from senior Tya Seth and two birdies and 74 from Garcia Rosette. That helped vault the Vikings into second place.

Boise State leads the tournament with 299-293=592 through two rounds. The Vikings are 11 shots back in second. Weber State sits at 303-301=604.

Portland State had four new players competing for the first time as Vikings: Porter (transfer from Dixie State), Seth (transfer from Idaho State) and freshmen Bayler Brundage and Payten Shimizu. Porter is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard with 75-72=147. Garcia Rosette, the only returning Viking in the tournament, is tied for 12th at 75-74=149. Seth is tied for 17th with 77-73=150.

In her first collegiate tournament, Shimizu, from Wailuku, HI, is tied for 52nd among 110 golfers in the field. She posted 78-79=157. Bayler Brundage, from West Linn High School, shot 79-81=160 and is tied for 70th.

It is a two-way tie at the top on the individual leaderboard as Tiffany Le of UC Riverside and Jessica Zelasko of Weber State each shot 72-71 for a one-over par total of 143. At 147, Porter is only four shots back of the lead.
