As the deadline for REAL ID enforcement nears, demand at Oregon DMV offices is increasing, particularly in densely populated areas. To address this surge, the Oregon DMV has added numerous REAL ID appointments and deployed staff from the Salem headquarters to assist with crowd management. Despite these efforts, customers may still face longer lines and extended wait times.

Oregon residents are reminded to verify if they already possess a REAL ID, identifiable by a star in the upper right corner of their card. A REAL ID is not necessary if one holds a passport or another federally accepted form of identification.

For those not planning to fly soon, it is advised to wait until their current credential expires before upgrading to a REAL ID. Although appointments for obtaining a REAL ID are available, they are not mandatory as all DMV offices accept walk-ins. Customers should regularly check for new appointment slots released daily. It is important to note that appointments booked specifically for REAL IDs must be used solely for that purpose; otherwise, individuals risk being turned away.

Applicants must bring appropriate documentation when applying for a REAL ID: one proof of identity and two proofs of home address from separate sources. Additionally, proof of lawful U.S. status and either a Social Security number or proof of ineligibility must be provided. The DMV offers an online guide to help applicants prepare their document checklist.

To expedite the process at most offices, individuals who have gathered all necessary documents can use self-check-in stations located in lobbies instead of queuing at front desks. At busier locations, after obtaining a ticket number, patrons can provide their cell phone numbers to receive text notifications about their turn.

Receiving a REAL ID card via mail can take up to three weeks; therefore, travelers should ensure compliance well ahead of any scheduled flights—ideally ensuring receipt by April 16 for travel commencing May 7.

For transactions unrelated to obtaining a REAL ID, customers are encouraged to utilize online services through DMV2U or visit one of ten express kiosks available for vehicle registration renewals. While acquiring a REAL ID online remains unavailable, increased use of digital services helps reduce office wait times overall.
