First Round of Future Ready Oregon Workforce Ready Grants Awarded to Expand Community Partnerships and Innovative Solutions
Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) was awarded a grant from the Higher Education Coordinating Commission’s (HECC) Future Ready Oregon Workforce Ready Grant program to increase workforce training efforts in the semiconductor industry. HECC is currently awarding $10 million in first-round grants to fund 42 Oregon projects that prioritize underserved and vulnerable communities. At MHCC, the funds will expand the existing Mobile Training project – a successful program improving support for and improvement of workforce development opportunities.MHCC Mobile Training project is an initiative that builds on MHCC’s existing manufacturing degree pathways, while creating a sustainable training partnership with Portland’s growing semiconductor industry. This project:Creates a mobile training/teaching lab to be used onsite at manufacturer’s sites for incumbent or existent workersMentors current experts from the industry to become part-time faculty and provide training Provides workforce training opportunities for job seekers with introductory mechatronics classesProvides wraparound support for participants through student resource specialists, strengthening job attainment, retention, and promotion among participants “In essence, we are taking MHCC to our students. The Mobile Training project provides an opportunity for incumbent workers to reduce the barriers to earn college credit,” MHCC Dean, Applied Technologies, Business Information Systems Kristin Lima said. “By creating this partnership with onsemi and Microchip, we are able to support their efforts to have highly trained workers, while encouraging more students to earn their certificates and degrees.” For more information, contact MHCC Associate Vice President Megan Nugent at Megan.Nugent@mhcc.edu.For more information about the Future Ready Oregon education and workforce training investments and funding opportunities, visit www.Oregon.gov/HigherEd.
