PORTLAND STATE LAUNCHES TUITION-FREE DEGREE PROGRAM

The Tuition-Free Degree program, available to Pell-eligible students of any age, offers full flexibility for first-year students nervous about taking their first college classes as well as students who may work or raise a family while attending school. PSU will be expanding Four Years Free and Transfers Finish Free and packaging them into one program that will reach more students. A PSU Tuition-Free Degree means that students no longer have to take a full load of classes every term to be eligible for guaranteed support. It also provides the same tuition-free benefit to students who may take more than four years to complete their degree.

“From our very first days as a university, PSU has served nontraditional and working students,” said PSU President Stephen Percy. “The last few years of the pandemic have taught us that flexibility is essential for all of our students but especially those most in financial need. Our new Tuition-Free Degree program delivers on that flexibility and puts a college degree in reach for all.”

The Tuition-Free Degree program covers tuition and most mandatory fees for eligible low-income Oregon students after applicable financial aid — including Federal Pell Grant and Oregon Opportunity Grant — is applied, filling the financial gap between what the university charges for most courses and the amount of a students' grants. There are no age restrictions, part-time students are welcome, and students can begin studies in the program at any time. PSU welcomes eligible former students who have yet to complete their education to take advantage of Tuition-Free Degree to achieve their diploma.

“Portland State offers an excellent college experience at an affordable price and we know that our degrees pay off for our students,” said PSU Provost Susan Jeffords. “A PSU degree is an investment in your future. Our graduates make more money and are more likely to have a good job with benefits than high school graduates.”

PSU invites students to enroll how and when it works for them — part-time or full-time, on campus or online — and offers all the resources and support of Oregon’s most diverse and only public urban research university.
