As warmer weather approaches, construction activity across the state is set to increase. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is informing residents about various projects underway, many of which require dry and warm conditions for tasks such as striping and paving.
An interactive map is available for residents to explore ongoing projects. By clicking on an orange dot or line, users can access detailed information about traffic impacts and sign up for email updates.
ODOT emphasizes that while construction may be inconvenient, businesses remain open during these times. Blue signs and markers indicate business entrances or parking lot accesses. "When in doubt – look for blue to help guide you to a nearby business!" says ODOT.
The department also advocates for the use of the zipper merge technique to enhance road safety. "Sharing the road with a zipper merge means being patient and taking turns," it states. Drivers are encouraged to stay in their lanes until reaching the merge point before alternating with other vehicles.
ADA curb ramp projects are being executed in batches due to varying readiness levels at different locations. Some sites are immediately ready for construction, while others require additional coordination or permits.
For updates, ODOT utilizes GovDelivery but advises subscribers to update preferences to receive relevant information. Updates are available for counties including Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook, Yamhill, Lincoln, Polk, Marion, Benton, Linn, and Lane.
Residents can also view ODOT's Flickr account for photos and videos showcasing maintenance and construction projects statewide.
Safety in work zones remains a priority; fines double regardless of worker presence if signs are displayed. Translation services are available by calling TTY (800) 735-2900 or using the Oregon Relay Service: 7-1-1.
Travelers can access real-time road conditions via TripCheck.com or by calling 5-1-1. Additionally, starting May 7th of this year, travelers will need federally accepted ID under REAL ID regulations when flying.
