Transportation officials have announced that lane closures on Interstate 5 southbound, initially scheduled for this coming weekend, will be postponed. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) confirmed that this decision comes due to a delay in certain supplies critical for the work.
The planned 24-hour right lane closure was slated to occur between 8 p.m. on Friday, March 28, and 6 a.m. on Monday, March 31. Officials have assured that updates will be provided ahead of the newly scheduled closure.
ODOT is currently upgrading the RealTime system, designed to enhance roadway safety and provide real-time traffic updates. This initiative involves the installation of RealTime Variable Advisory Speed (VAS) signs, which are being placed along Interstate 5, south of downtown Portland, extending from the Ross Island Bridge to Terwilliger Boulevard. Completion of this work is expected during the summer of 2025.
The RealTime VAS technology calculates and displays advisory speeds based on real-time data, such as traffic and weather conditions, gathered from sensors and cameras on the route. The goal is to reduce crashes and traffic delays, alert drivers about slowdowns, and give advance notices for speed adjustments due to current conditions.
