Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) are set to commence construction on a project aimed at enhancing bicycle and pedestrian facilities along U.S. 101 in Brookings. The work is scheduled to start the week of March 18 and will focus on a three-quarter mile section of highway between downtown Brookings and Harris Beach State Park.

The U.S. 101 Parkview Drive to Lucky Lane project includes replacing sidewalk curb ramps at various locations from Easy Street to Lucky Lane. These new ramps will adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act, facilitating better access for individuals using wheelchairs.

Additionally, near Ransom Creek, the northbound U.S. 101 bike lane and sidewalk will be extended by more than 1,000 feet northward. A push-button pedestrian crossing with flashing lights will be installed near Ransom Avenue, while adjustments will be made to highway travel lanes between Heather Lane and Arnold Lane.

Drivers should anticipate intermittent daytime lane and shoulder closures throughout the construction zone. Traffic control will be managed by flaggers, with most delays expected to be brief but some potentially lasting up to 20 minutes. Occasional lane closures may also occur on side roads adjacent to the work area.

Alternative routes will be provided for pedestrians when sidewalks are closed due to construction activities. While most work will occur during daylight hours, some night work might also take place, resulting in noise typical of road and sidewalk construction.

Tidewater Contractors of Brookings secured the contract with a successful bid of $3,143,165. The project's completion is targeted for September.

ODOT holds responsibility for overseeing this project’s contract and delivery. The agency has collaborated with the City of Brookings throughout planning and design phases and will maintain coordination during construction.

Residents interested in receiving advance notifications about any night work can email Dan.Latham@odot.oregon.gov. Further information is available on the project website or through ODOT Public Information Officer Dan Latham at 541-817-5200.
